Summer....Inside

Guten Tag,
I've been reading somewhere today that there are a lot of blogs that have wilted and died and that fact is spurring me into writing at least something.
Uni is over for another year and it went well. Grades I can't complain about and celebrations that made a hard year seem so long ago. Settled into my summer gig at Tait Electronics, not a bad place to work and definitely an eye opener. After venturing around the world during my last two summers though it is quite a strange feeling to be stuck in a 9-5 job. Missing the sun most days in a rather dimly lit, cool cave. The blue of a day much nicer peaking in from between overlapping blinds. Hmmm. Sydney, Fueterventura, even the West Coast reading is where a good summer should be spent. Anyway with about 6 weeks to go I can't say it's been all bad. Learnt tons, met a few people, realised how cruisey uni can be.
Anyhow enough ramblings.

Today's Ramblings

Hey Everyone,

Few things to discuss today, firstly Microsoft Student Day, who had fun? Who thought it was worthwhile? Well i'm proud to announce it was a success with many people turning up to enjoy various presentations from the good guys at Microsoft and there sponsors, NAVMAN namely. Also huge thanks to to Coca Cola for all the Liftplus you guys managed to drink. Oh and before i forget, all the industry speakers. Hopefully after the success of the event this year Microsoft will continue to provide this great event in years to come.

Secondly, by the time most of you get around to reading this i will have probably given the second part of my 2 part C# intro, so what i'm doing is posting up the C# vs Java link for you guys. This is a comprehensive comparison and more than a 5 minute read be warned.

Thanks to everyone who attended these presentations, i hope they have been worthwhile for you. Keep watching this space as next term we will hopefully get some students involved to give a few demos into stuff they are interested in, confirmed already is someone to give a bit of a look into Xaml/C#3.0 and related technologies. If you would like to share something exciting about Microsoft with everyone else then feel free to contact me as always and we can discuss.

Anyhow
Chow

Presentation 2

Hey everyone
Thanks to all of those who attended my presentation last week and for those who didn't I hope I see you at the next one. This will be the next week on Thursday the 10th August. Photos from the recent one will go up shortly.

Big news as most of you are probably aware Microsoft Student Day is being held here in Christchurch at Canterbury University on Friday the 4th of August. This is probably the most significant event for students in Christchurch this year and is looking like it'll be really worthwhile. If I can say, we are very lucky to have some of NZ's big Microsoft men coming to speak and also some very reputable industry speakers. There are going to be tons of giveaways and prizes including Xbox360's, NAVMAN navigation systems, Phillips monitors, Microsoft hardware/software and a might payload of Liftplus.
Registration numbers are picking up fast and if you don't want to miss out book yourself a seat now using the following link - http://www.microsoft.com/nz/events/teched/studentday

Hope to see you all there.
Regards
Matt

Prize Giving 2

Hey Everyone,
Took me awhile to track down the 2nd prize winner from Orientation but I finally have and needless to say she was wrapped. I will post the photos up shortly so check them out too.

I have to say i'm a happy man at the moment, exams out of the way and decent grades to boot, now all there is to do is buckle down to do it one last time this year. As it is the start of the term and I do have a little more time on my hands, I think it is about time I get another presentation under my belt, possibly two.

Hopefully the first of these will be next Thursday the 20th of July with the possiblity of another on the 27th. These are just tentative and I will be looking into room bookings today, so it could change around a little.

The two presentations are going to look at C# and give you an all you need to know to jump right in and start programming. I will also make the slides and source code available after the presentation for anyone who is interested.

Anyhow must rush off to German
Servus!

Quiz Night

Hey guys,

Todays the day to go blogging about the Microsoft Quiz night I held at the universtiy on the 8th June. It was big, great to see so many students turn up with their thinking caps on. Thanks to all of them for making the night a huge success.

I should also thank a few others here. Ahmad, Toby, James, Simon, Alexey, Robin for helping out with marking as organisation. (Hope I haven't missed anyone) Would of been a lot harder without the help of these guys.

I officially declare the event as a success as the turnout was what I was hoping and many have commented how enjoyable the whole night was.

Well done to the winners - 'The Dirty Ginga' and congrats to everyone who came close. There were prizes after each round also so well done to everyone who managed to win something.

If you are reading this then make sure you also check out the photos in the blog section.

Anyhow hope everyone was as well fed as me and start getting a new team together as it looks like I may run another next semester.

Microsoft Technical Training Session

Hello again

This Wednesday just been I was fortunate enough to attend the Microsoft Technical Training Session held in Christchurch, this was a great event and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The main topics were Microsoft related stuff of course but it closely linked into stuff we are being lectured to about at uni. It was a good feeling to know that the stuff we are studying towards is really used in the real world and that University of Canterbury is right up there with what's happening out there in the real world.

They also put on a real nice academic lunch and i noticed a few students snuck in to take advantage. At the luncheon they were discussing the ways in which your school or department can become part of the MSDNAA and get access to all the goodies that Microsoft provide under this programme. Definately something I would go to again, next time I won't wear shorts though!!

Signing off

First Orientation Prize Giving

Hey everyone,
I've hardly had a moment to spare of recent, but in my few free moments I've managed to contact one of the prize winners from the Orientation competition that ran near the start of the year. It was Jeffery Hu and you can find some photos of him recieving the prizes over in the photos section. He recently emailed the following comments back to me in response to his good fortune.

'It sounds funny that I don't really believe one day some one calls me saying you just win a such prize. As such, few months ago, a lady from USA called me on my mobile saying 'Congratulations! You just won 7 days Caribbean cruise for free' I immediately hung up the phone...' However, few days ago, while I was just entering front door of my home, my mobile phone rung with a strange mobile phone number. I picked up the call, I first heard similar saying to the USA call I ever received. I was going to hang it up, but the guy's voice on the phone sounded sincere and serious, so I thought all right, give you a go see what's goanna happen... as I kept hearing what he patiently explaining and recalling my poor memory, things went up dramatically! I really just won the second prizes from Microsoft NZ!! And the guy I now know and remember called Matthew Elliot-Microsoft Student Ambassador at University of Canterbury, he was just very patiently trying to convince me that I was the second prize winner. what a silly me!
Poor Matt, I really hope MS would reimburse your phone bill wasted on my call.
Any way, it has been awesome experience for me and my family!! Thank you very much Matt for your great work!!'

I'm still trying to track down the other winner but hopefully I'll manage that shortly and of course blog all about that too.
Till next time, chow.
